Boynton Beach is a coastal city in southern Palm Beach County, Florida, positioned on the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway roughly 15 miles south of West Palm Beach and midway between Delray Beach and Lantana. The community began as a farming settlement founded by Nathan Boynton in the late nineteenth century and incorporated as a city in 1920, growing from an agricultural and fishing outpost into a South Florida bedroom community and coastal destination. The city's geography defines its appeal. To the east, oceanfront parks and the Boynton Inlet provide direct beach and water access, while to the west, newer residential communities extend toward Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike. This east-west layout means Boynton Beach spans two very different environments: a compact, older coastal core near the water and a larger suburban interior built around golf-course and master-planned communities. Residentially, Boynton Beach is a mix of established mid-century neighborhoods, condominium communities near the Intracoastal, and newer single-family subdivisions to the west. The population skews older, with a substantial share of retirees and seasonal residents, though families are drawn by the schools, parks and relative affordability within coastal Palm Beach County. Downtown has seen investment in recent years, anchored by the Boynton Beach Arts & Cultural Center and a growing dining scene. For homebuyers, Boynton Beach offers coastal South Florida living at a somewhat more attainable price point than neighboring Delray Beach or Boca Raton, with the trade-off of a more modest, less polished commercial core. Its beaches, inlet and rail access, combined with proximity to Delray's dining district and Palm Beach International Airport, make it a practical coastal choice.
