Crystal River is a city in Citrus County, Florida, set along King's Bay, a spring-fed estuary on the Gulf Coast about an hour north of Tampa. With a population of about 3,400, it is a small city with an outsized ecological identity: it is the self-professed 'Home of the Manatee' and the heart of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, the only national wildlife refuge dedicated to protecting the West Indian manatee.
