Lauderhill is a city in central Broward County, Florida, and one of the principal cities of the Miami metropolitan area. Incorporated in 1959, it grew from a planned community developed by Herbert Sadkin on former dairy farmland—originally proposed to be named "Sunnydale" before the Lauderhill name was adopted. Its central location in Broward County, immediately west of Fort Lauderdale, placed it squarely in the path of South Florida's mid-century suburban expansion, and the city developed as a dense, established residential community rather than a far-flung suburb. Over the decades Lauderhill has become one of the region's most diverse communities, with a large Caribbean and West Indian population that has shaped the city's cultural and civic life.
