Melrose is an unincorporated community in north-central Florida that, unusually, spans portions of four counties: Alachua, Bradford, Clay, and Putnam. It lies on State Road 26, about 17 miles east of Gainesville and roughly 50 miles southwest of Jacksonville, in a rural belt of lakes, pine woods, and rolling sandhills. The community is home to roughly 6,700 residents, though its population swells on weekends and in summer as lakehouse owners and visitors arrive. Water is central to Melrose's identity. The community is built around a chain of clear lakes, most prominently Lake Santa Fe and Lake Geneva, along with a number of smaller lakes. The Melrose Public Library holds local significance as the first full-service library branch in Putnam County.
