Sunrise is a city in central-western Broward County, Florida, and a principal city within the Miami metropolitan area. It lies roughly 13 miles west of downtown Fort Lauderdale and adjacent to the Everglades' western edge, positioned at the crossroads of several of South Florida's major transportation corridors. The 2020 census placed the population at 97,335, making Sunrise one of the larger municipalities in Broward County. The city's modern identity is closely tied to retail and sports. Sawgrass Mills, opened in 1990, is among the largest outlet and destination shopping centers in the United States—described as the largest single-story outlet mall in the country—with more than 400 stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues spread across over two million square feet.
