Broward County Planned Community
Welcome to Tamarac, a master-planned city in northwest Broward County known for its landscaped neighborhoods, abundant parks, and easy access to Fort Lauderdale and the Everglades.
Tamarac is a residential city in northwest Broward County, Florida, situated roughly 12 miles northwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale and part of the broader Miami metropolitan area. The community began in the early 1960s when developer Kenneth Behring laid out the first neighborhood, Tamarac Lakes, with one- and two-bedroom homes arranged around a shared clubhouse. The model proved popular, and Tamarac incorporated as a city on July 19, 1963. That clubhouse-centered, maintenance-oriented design still shapes the city's identity today. Over the decades Tamarac evolved from its origins as a retirement destination into a more diverse, family-friendly suburb. The city's population has grown steadily, reaching 71,897 in the 2020 census, with the city's own estimates now placing the total above 74,000. A large share of residents are over 65, reflecting the city's 55-plus and maintenance-free community heritage, while younger families and working professionals have increasingly been drawn by comparatively attainable housing and proximity to Broward County employment centers. Tamarac's location is a central part of its appeal. Residents are within a short drive of the shopping, dining, and entertainment corridors of Broward County, the beaches of the Atlantic coast, and the Everglades to the west. The city itself maintains an extensive network of neighborhood parks, lakes, and walking paths, and its Parks and Recreation Department operates facilities including the Caporella Aquatic Center. Many of the community's residential developments provide their own clubhouses and pools, carrying forward the social, amenity-rich character that distinguished Tamarac from its earliest days. With Broward County Transit bus service and nearby access to Florida's Turnpike and the Sawgrass Expressway, Tamarac offers a practical base for commuters working in Fort Lauderdale and across South Florida. The city is also a short drive from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, adding to its convenience for both frequent travelers and seasonal residents. For homebuyers, Tamarac's enduring appeal lies in the combination of association-managed, maintenance-minded housing, plentiful parks and lakes, and a location that keeps the amenities of Broward County and the Atlantic coast within easy reach.
