Master-Planned Broward County City
Welcome to Weston, the master-planned Broward County city of gated neighborhoods, lakes, and manicured parks set just east of the Everglades.
Weston sits in far western Broward County, Florida, just east of the Everglades and roughly 20 miles west of Fort Lauderdale, with Miami about 35 miles to the southeast. It is one of South Florida's best-known master-planned communities, built on about 15,000 acres assembled in the 1950s by industrialist Arthur Vining Davis through his Arvida development company. The community was renamed Weston in 1984, its first homes completed in the Windmill Ranch neighborhood, and it incorporated as a city in 1996. Its population is about 68,000. Weston's design is its defining trait. Rather than growing organically, the city was laid out as a coordinated whole — a collection of gated neighborhoods arranged around lakes, green space, and a network of roughly 14 manicured parks. The result is a community of uniform landscaping, tree-lined boulevards, and orderly streets that feels deliberate in a way few South Florida suburbs do. The separate Bonaventure district, developed independently, adds an established residential layer to the city's southeastern side. The local economy is anchored by healthcare. Cleveland Clinic's Weston Hospital, a major multi-specialty academic medical center, is the city's most prominent employer and a regional draw. Beyond that, Weston functions primarily as a residential community for professionals who commute throughout Broward and Miami-Dade counties via Interstate 75, the Sawgrass Expressway, and Interstate 595. Schools are a central draw. Weston is part of Broward County Public Schools, and Cypress Bay High School is consistently ranked among Florida's top public high schools, offering Advanced Placement and Cambridge International programs. A network of well-regarded elementary and middle schools, plus a Broward College campus, reinforces the city's family orientation. Weston suits households seeking a safe, planned, school-focused environment with strong amenities and expressway access to the region's jobs and beaches.
